Why we need your help

Cases of invasive meningococcal disease have increased significantly in the UK since 2022, and your help is more important than ever.

In 2023, just five days after her 19th birthday, and studying at the University of Manchester, Sophia became unwell. Sophia’s mum and university flat mates called emergency services and Sophia was diagnosed with meningococcal meningitis.

Sophia spent three nights in intensive care in Manchester Royal Infirmary, another nine days in a high dependency unit and a final three days in a regular ward. She had emergency surgery for a septic joint in her hip and had myocarditis (inflammation of the heart), as well as permanently losing hearing in her right ear.

Sophia says, “I am grateful to be alive and although I feel unlucky, I know that compared to others I got off lightly!”

By taking part in Squats Save Lives, you will ensure individuals like Sophia receive the support they need to rebuild their lives following meningitis, while also funding life-saving research into the prevention and treatment of the disease.
