Supporting those with fatigue after meningitis

2nd January 2025

In December we hosted an online support event for those who had meningitis in the last 18 months and were also experiencing fatigue after meningitis. It was a relaxed and supportive session which provided people with information and resources to help them to manage fatigue.

Keep Connected - hearing 4

The session focussed on:

  • What is fatigue and how it can affect us?
  • Causes of fatigue
  • Self-help strategies and signposting to manage fatigue
  • An opportunity to have a discussion, share experiences of fatigue after meningitis and any tips and strategies that you may have found helpful

Presented over Zoom, the event was hosted by Meningitis Now Helpline and Information Nurse Manager, Claire Donovan, and Community Support Officer Paul Blackburn. This was followed by a brief Q&A and then the session was opened up to the participants to tell their story of fatigue after meningitis and share their experiences.

After the event attendees overall felt more informed on how to manage fatigue. Attendees shared:

  • "Speaking to others was so powerful and honestly, quite emotional. It was the first time i truly felt like i didn’t make this up and it really helped me find a little peace with myself and what has felt like a lack of progress getting back on track from a productivity perspective.”
  • “It almost feels like a weight has been lifted this week, and Iieally needed that.”
  • “Just being in a room with people who get it, was so worthwhile, nevermind all of the valuable information we were given.”
  • “It was really nice to hear from others in similar situations and for the opportunity to chat.”
  • "This was one of the most validating and uniting experiences I’ve had on this journey.”

Community Support Officer Paul shared this about the event,

“The event provided a safe and supportive space for people to share their experience with others who really get what they have been through. The event was a success in that it allowed people to gain confidence and talk with others who really get what they have been though. Many of the participants had not met anyone before who had experienced fatigue after meningitis until this event.”

There will be more Keep Connected events coming up in 2025, offering more support for those impacted by meningitis. You can find more about our support events on our website.
