Amy S’s story

14th December 2024

Amy, from Kilsyth in North Lanarkshire, contracted viral meningitis at the age of 25 in November this year. Her symptoms included head pressure and headache, photophobia, body aches, sinusitis and vomiting. Fortunately treatment was prompt, but she’s still suffering some symptoms and struggling to get back to normal, as she tells us here.

"Meningitis Now’s website has educated me further and shown me how to get support if needed.”

“I had a sinus infection for two weeks prior to being diagnosed.

"I began to become sensitive to the light and feel a lot of pressure in the back of my head, then the vomiting began. I became unable to stand any light and that’s when I visited my GP.

“My GP referred me to A&E where I was given blood tests, CT scans, anti-viral medication and antibiotics. I had three attempts at a lumbar puncture and was kept in hospital for six days.

“Since leaving hospital I am still experiencing extreme fatigue, headaches and body aches.

Never would have thought I had meningitis

“I never would’ve thought I had meningitis as it seemed so rare to me. However, I have since learned through Meningitis Now that it is more common in my age group.

“I feel lucky I received prompt treatment, although I am still suffering some symptoms and struggling to get back to normal.

“After hearing about Meningitis Now on Facebook its website has educated me further and shown me how to get support if needed.”
