What is peer mentoring?
This is the opportunity to chat with someone who has been impacted by meningitis, either directly through having it themselves or indirectly through a close relative or friend. They’re not a counsellor and they can’t solve your problems for you, but they can listen, be supportive and share what they did when similar stuff happened to them.
Our peer mentors are DBS-checked and have had training.
How will it work?
You may want to chat for a couple of months or just once, via social media, email, phone or face to face. Let us know what you're thinking and we'll see what we can do.
Conversations and information shared between you and your mentor may be fed back to the B&A team so we can help them be the best mentor they can be for you. However, all conversations within B&A are confidential, except if your mentor is concerned that you or someone else is at risk of serious harm. If this is the case, they will try to discuss it with you first. In these circumstances it may be necessary to involve other services.
Who are the Peer Mentors?
What if things going on in my life are too big?
Peer mentoring may highlight that you're struggling more than you thought. Although our peer mentors have had training, they're not experts. Sometimes, the best people to chat to are experts and in that case, we have access to counselling in your local area.
